Your Executive is continuing to prepare programs and operations for the 2010-11 hockey season. We are excited about continuing the programs that have been successful and are adding new ones.

EARLY REGISTRATION

We are continuing to offer early registrations (with a discount) to North SEERA players, because many of you have asked for it, so that when fall arrives, there is one less thing/fee to worry about. Please refer to Registrar’s letter for complete details for early and subsequent registration dates, locations and times.

Participation Fee Process

This year at the time of registration an UNDATED cheque, payable to North SEERA Hockey in the amount of $150.00 will be required. This will be collected on behalf of the future team the player is assigned. The participation check will ONLY be CASHED if a/the volunteer commitment to a team is NOT fulfilled.

Community League(CL) Process Change – DO NOT PURCHASE 2010-11 CL Membership

Hockey Edmonton(HE) and Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues(EFCL) has implemented a change with how hockey families will meet the required community membership component of registration. A mandatory family corporate rate community membership fee will be applied to the primary player registering for hockey, per family. It will be a separate line item and WILL be collected for each family that registers for hockey. The corporate rate fee is $25.00, which is the average CL membership cost across the city. The money will be collected on behalf of the community leagues and will be sent in two separate accounting periods. August 2010 and January 2011 to EFCL offices and they will then calculate and send onto each community league the portion that belongs to them. The accompanying report will share the family members name/address/postal code so that the league can verify and distribute the membership cards/skate tags etc that belong to the league, to their respective community league members. NO cards or numbers will be distributed by the hockey associations, only collection of the ‘per’ family fee, ensuring the partnership and membership component of registration is met by collecting said fee. You will be charged the fee even if you have a 2010/11 membership card so EFCL and HE is asking that hockey families DO NOT purchase a membership from the leagues directly, this will only duplicate the purchase and will be the responsibility of EFCL to deal with any duplication of purchases. Clarification of process can be found on EFCL website or via your hockey Registrar.

EVALUATION PROCESS:

North SEERA as a program has (through the various Directors and their experiences) over the years developed an evaluation process that works as well, if not better than any other process that is in use.

With this in mind the program uses players’ previous experience and coaches’ evaluations as a preliminary guide for initial placement. The evaluations consist of drill/skill (skating technique/stopping ability/puck handling etc) sessions and scrimmage (hockey technique/knowledge/sense) sessions or combination. A committee of on-ice coaches, off-ice evaluators and Directors comprise the assessment group. An established set of criteria is followed by each evaluator. The decision of where players will eventually play will be determined by a consensus of the committee. If NO consensus can be determined the category Director (either independently or in conjunction with the Hockey Director & President) will make the final determination. All players skate in a general evaluation according to surname and are issued a coloured pinny at this first skate, again loosely based on previous level of play and coaches evaluations. As the evaluation process progresses, individuals may be asked to change their pinny colour, this is to regroup the player to a level he is better suited, or to even out a colour scrimmage, or to compare a player with a different colour for various reasons.  As the fine tuning of the evaluation process proceeds, every effort is made to ensure all players play at a level they are competitive at. This is a serious consideration as we endeavour to have the player play with, and against, similarly skilled players so that they are challenged enough to develop further, but not be discouraged.

Please ensure ALL pinnys are returned to the category director at the final evaluation skate!! These are expensive and replacement of equipment is a cost that ultimately has to be passed onto hockey families through fees.
